A trickster with a love of money, Dane Valdeaux has worked tirelessly his entire life to obtain it. Learning from an early age that honest work was just too honest for his taste, Dane strode confidently down the path of the criminal. His dexterous hands and charming personality allow him to get close to anyone… and if not, at least close enough to their pockets. He is also a very cautious man by nature, and very wary about getting caught. He knows that once he has been outed as a thief, he cannot practice his trade any longer.

Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened. A portly merchant of some repute had been passing through the streets of Siwal one day. It seemed like an easy enough mark. The man was carelessly brandishing his wallet, almost as if to attract would-be thieves. Dane could not resist and fell for the ruse. He was apprehended quickly by the merchant’s escort and given a choice. Either he would put his talents to work for his new master, or lose a hand. He might as well have threatened his very life! Dane very quickly decided to throw his lot in with the merchant.

Unfortunately, the merchant wasn’t an ordinary merchant. He was in truth an underboss of the Sand Sharks, a smuggling ring based in Siwal but looking to expand into new markets. Dane spent the next few years working for the Sand Sharks, performing various tasks that put his many talents to good use. Sealing deals, securing new routes, throwing the guards off the trail. Coercing the competition. Whatever needed to be done. The bard wasn’t particularly happy with this new arrangement, but he couldn’t see a way out of it. Time passed, and Dane’s many successes began to earn him the trust of his superiors. One fateful day, Dane was given an unexpected assignment. A new town had sprung up near the newly discovered Tomb of the Serpent King, which meant a new opportunity for criminal enterprise. The Sand Sharks would stake their claim before anyone else. Dane was instructed by his captain simply to, “take Jokari for the Sand Sharks by any means necessary.” He agreed.

But Dane might have his own plans in mind…
